Portion Of I-275 Could Be Renamed To Honor Maupin

BATAVIA, Ohio -- A portion of Interstate 275 could be renamed to honor a Tri-state soldier who was kidnapped three years ago while on patrol in Iraq.
State Rep. Joe Uecker introduced legislation Thursday to rename as ?Matt Maupin Highway? that stretch of the interstate that runs through Clermont County.
The Maupin family told News 5 that, if lawmakers pass the measure, Ohio?s director of transportation might erect markers along the roadway that would tell drivers about Maupin, who was captured April 9, 2004.

Maupin has never been located, and no remains have ever been found.
Most portions of Interstate 275, which loops more than 80 miles around greater Cincinnati, opened in 1977, and the roadway?s official name is the Donald H. Rolf Circle Freeway.
The name was intended to honor a Hamilton County commissioner who helped shepherd the decades-long construction project, but is rarely used by area residents

'Heroes Celebration' Will Help Military Families Connect

WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- Just 12 weeks ago, about 100 people planned to hold an event to show their support to American troops, and then word began to spread.
More than 30,000 people are expected to fill Voice of America park this weekend for the ?Heroes Celebration,? where military families will connect via satellite to their loved ones stationed overseas.
?I just miss his company,? said Rocky King, whose son is a soldier. ?He's enjoyable to be around (and) he has a great sense of humor.?

King may have a chance to share a laugh with his son, Eric, who is serving in Iraq, with the help of Freedom Calls, a satellite telephone connection that allows military families to speak face to face.
?It's one thing to get them on the phone, but when you can see they're okay, I think it would make a big difference,? said Eric King?s fianc?e, Carolyn Brittain.
Freedom Calls will also hook up festival-goers with troops stationed at five overseas military bases.
Kris Brannock, who has been helping families to connect, said the most challenging part is getting the word out to troops overseas about the event.
?We have one father whose son was hurt in an IED accident last week, so he's trying desperately to get ahold of his son, but we don't know yet,? Brannock said.
In addition to private videoconferences, performances by musical artists .38 Special, Daniel Smith, Rodney Adkins and others will be broadcast live to troops in Iraq and Kuwait.
?To have that many people and see people enjoying themselves and thinking of them, they're going to think it's groovy,? King said.
The event will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. at Voice of America Park, and admission is free.
However, organizers will accept donations to benefit military families, possibly through similar events.
